A Respectable Actress (Thomas Nelson, October 2015)

When India Hartley is accused of murder, she must uncover the deceptions of others to save herself.

India Hartley, a famous and beautiful actress, is now alone after her father’s death and embarks upon a tour of theaters across the South. Her first stop is Savannah’s Southern Palace. On the eve of the second night’s performance, something goes horribly wrong. Her co-star, Arthur Sterling, shot dead on stage in front of a packed house, and India, arrested and accused of the crime.

A benefactor hires Philip Sinclair, the best—and handsomest—lawyer in Savannah to defend India. A widower, Philip is struggling to reinvent his worn-out plantation on St. Simons Island. He needs to increase his income from his law practice to restore Indigo Point, and hardly anything will bring him more new clients than successfully defending a famous actress on a murder charge.

Because India can’t go anywhere in town without being mobbed, Philip persuades the judge handling her case to let him take her to Indigo Point until her trial date. India is charmed by the beauty of the Georgia low country and is increasingly drawn to Philip. But a locked room that appears to be a shrine to Philip’s dead wife and the unsolved disappearance of a former slave girl raise troubling questions. Piecing together clues in an abandoned boat and a burned-out chapel, India discovers a trail of dark secrets that lead back to Philip, secrets that ultimately may hold the key to her freedom. If only he will believe her.

My Review

When India takes the stage that one fateful night, her life changes forever.  Little does she know just how her life will change.

Her part was to pick up a prop gun and shoot her costar.  Of course a prop gun is all fake, has no firing pin, the ammo isn’t real, the costar doesn;t really die.  tonight though, the firing pin IS real, the ammo is real and the costar, Mr. Arthur Sterling, is wounded and then passes away soon after.  India is held in custody until a dashing young attorney, Phillip Sinclair, hired by Mrs. Celia Makay comes to whisk her away and prepare her case.

India finds so much more!  She finds true friendship after meeting Phillip’s sister Amelia and the woman who is holding grudges that India soon finds out that have haunted Philip for a few years.

A Respectable Actress, filled with lots of intrigue, mystery, action, secrets becomes a great read to keep you moving from the very first page, to the very last word.

I don’t normally like historical fiction, especially when you through some romance in there, however, this book was written so well, that it made me feel like I was really there at times!

I often found myself lingering wondering what the days and nights were like.  What it was really like to have to wait days for responses to handwritten letters!  So many other things took me back!  A Respectable Actress was well written and well researched.

Dorothy Love has crafted a fun, exciting piece of work with  A Respectable Actress, based on the real-life actress Frances Anne (Fannie) Kemble.  This is the second book of Love’s that I have fallen in love with, thinking that I wouldn’t like from the moment I picked it up
